08 NOVEMBER 2024 BLUE POINT CONSORTIUM

The European project "BLUEPOINT " Blue Circular Economy of marine plastics", funded by Interreg Atlantic Area Programme held the annual general assembly on October 1st and 2nd at University of Limerick (Ireland).

Members of eleven partners and an associated partner participating in the project attended the event. During first session, the consortium reviewed the progress of the project and the main activities that will be carried out next year. Furthermore, the partners presented main progress and outputs of these first months of implementation, such as: first conclusions about the research on technologies for the marine plastic value chain; draft of the dashboard with technology trends and business models that will be available on the project website by the end of the year; public campaigns and awareness raising activities organized in Guimarães (Portugal); first prototype of a marine plastic drone detection system; and first materials based on recycled marine plastics. The day ended with a visit to CRIS (Centre for Robotics & Intelligent Systems) Laboratory.

On day two, the partners moved to Spanish Point for a demo of the technological pilot developed by CRIS, a marine plastic drone detection system. The partner had the opportunity to fly the drones and to see live the detection system. In the afternoon, there was a demo of the app for display and geo-localisation of detected plastics, where partners were able to test the app live through a beach clean-up activity.

The general assembly had also a social agenda, including a medieval dinner at 15th Century iconic Bunratty Castle.
